More than 158,000 accidents occurred on National Highways across the country in the year 2023. Around 1,50,000 – 1,60,000 accidents were reported in 2024 (not reported officially). The first half of 2025 is now complete, and some of the major road accidents have made headlines.
In these accidents, thousands of people lost their lives. And the major reason for these accidents to happen is the lack of sleep. Trucks are the major reason for these road accidents. A very long distance is covered by these truck drivers with improper rest.
Due to a lack of sleep and not having proper rest, these accidents happen. They prefer to sleep inside the truck itself or on the roadside, as there is no proper facility for them.
To reduce the number of these accidents, the Government of India has introduced a new initiative, “Apna Ghar”. According to this scheme, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have to set a amenities in their fuel stations. The pricing for this facility will be only 112 rupees to stay for 8 hours. And if 50 or more than 50 liters of fuel is purchased, no money will be charged for the stay.
Drivers will get an AC dormitory, food, a cleaned washroom, hot and cold water facilities, and secure parking. Along with that, a facility to make your food will also be given.
To book the room, install the Apna Ghar app from the Play Store or App Store. Then register yourself with your mobile number or Gmail ID. After permitting location access, look for the nearest Apna Ghar from the app and book the room from your mobile phone.
After paying 112 rupees from UPI, the room will be booked. For another way, look for the nearest center from the app and then reach there and book the room at that center itself. And pay the money at that branch.
A reason for launching the scheme is that the Government did not want the truck driver to drive while tired; first, let them take a rest, and then they can drive. As of now, more than 350 Apna Ghar facilities have been established by OMCs all over the national highways in India.
The scheme is looking to turn out as a success. Around 65,000 users have registered. The government is planning to increase its number amenities by 1000 by March 2027. With this initiative from the government, a huge drop could be seen in the number of accidents by the end of the year.
