Elon Musk’s Tesla’s First-ever Showroom Launch in India

Tesla is known for making the best electric vehicles worldwide. Now Tesla has entered the fourth-largest automotive production in the world.

It was 2016 when Tesla was set to make their grand entry in India. Even the company started taking pre-orders from Indian customers. But due to import duties, taxes, luxury, tariffs, the price of the vehicle got twice of its original global price. And then it started delaying. Negotiations over manufacturing were also one of the major reasons.

In March 2024, a scheme was introduced to manufacture electric vehicles in India. And reduced the import duties to 70% for electronic vehicles under $35,000 in return for factory commitments. Interested companies have to start production in the country within 3 years with an annual import cap of 8000 units.

A drop in sales was seen in last quarter for Tesla. It sold around 3.84 lakh units which was 60,000 less than the previous time. BYD, a Chinese brand, has surpassed Tesla in 2024, becoming the largest electric vehicle seller in the world. The trade relations between India and China are not good enough right now. Which could somehow profit Tesla in another way. And it can be said that one of the reasons for Tesla to come to India.

If the company succeeds in providing great after-sales service and features in the car, depending on Indian conditions, the country may become a key market for Tesla. But there are no intentions from Tesla to manufacture in India currently.

The first showroom of Tesla is open in Mumbai, the financial capital of India. Located at Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai (at Maker Maxity Mall). And will explore more cities in India. Delhi-NCR is going to be the next one.

In India, Tesla model Y is the first one to get the launch. The cars were built in Shanghai (China) and imported to India. The car has been launched at two prices –

  • 61.07 lakh rupees for the base variant (Real-Wheel-Drive)
  • 69.15 lakh rupees for the long range. (All-Wheel-Drive)

The on-road price of its long range may even rise to around 74 lakh rupees.

However, the same price of Model Y in America is $48,990, which is converted to around 42 lakh in Rupees.

Deliveries of the base model are expected by the third quarter of 2025, whereas the long-range may go by the last quarter of the year.
