Maruti Suzuki  XL5: A Premium Version of Wagon-R

The forgotten premium version of the Maruti Wagon R. The Indian business conglomerate, Maruti, launched a car named Wagon R in 1999. Little did they know that the car would be one of the greatest innovations of their brand. Wagon R gave a successful output.

After many years, Maruti realized the need to update its evergreen wagon R and produce a more premium version of it to satisfy its customers and make its mark in the automotive market. Following this, the brand launched the idea of a premium hatchback in 2020 at the Auto Expo 2020, and the car was named Maruti XL5, but due to some reasons, the car remained in anticipation and has not been launched till now as of 2025. Exterior

The car has a beautiful and stylish design, which gives a dynamic vibe from the outside. Being a premium version of the Wagon R, it would retain the iconic boxy silhouette, tallboy design, but the design would see some changes, which would contribute to the premium look of the car, like – 

Restyled front design, which includes differently designed DRLs and projector highlights. It would have a new grille, different from the standard version. 

The sides would have 15-inch alloy wheels, increasing the car’s efficiency, and from the rear end, the car’s new bumper would be designed, with the taillights would also be upgraded, completing the exterior look.

Interior

From the spy shots, we get the information that the Maruti XL5 has a spacious and roomy cabin, designed to contribute to its premium features.

It would be equipped with a dual-tone dashboard. Its spacious cabin makes the journey comfortable and non-suffocating. The flat-bottom steering wheel with a cruise control comes as a driver’s aid.

A digital cluster has also been fitted in it to display the necessary navigation information. You do not have to compromise with the fun part of driving, for which a 7-inch infotainment system has been fitted inside the Maruti XL5

With the displacement of 1197 cc and ground clearance of 165mm, the car becomes a comfortable drive. Other than this, the Maruti XL5 has a manual transmission, BS VI emission norm compliance, and a total of 4 cylinders in it.

Safety features include an ABS with EDB system in place. Airbags and the Suzuki Heartect platform keep you safe in unforeseen crashes and keep you away from the cabin. 

Infotainment includes a Smartplay studio, new age connections that support Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto for seamless smartphone integration. Multimedia includes easy access to radio, Bluetooth, USB, and AUX inputs for music playback. Navigation helps you to direct your drive, which is so cool. It also has some great features where you can play videos by using the USB connection. Vibrant and customised touch display, which is super user-friendly. It can also connect you to cloud-based services. Vehicle alerts, such as low fuel or open doors, are helpful.

Maruti XL5: Price, and Launch 

The Maruti XL5 is yet to be launched. It was revealed at the Auto Expo 2020 and underwent the testing phase. It was unable to launch post that, and the car is still a concept that’s hypothetical. The [ex-showroom] price for the Maruti XL5 was estimated to be around Rs 5 lakh to 8 lakh, which is an affordable option for the mid-range car buyers of India.

Maruti Suzuki continues to grow in its lineup and focuses on its core products. Expanding its SUVs and EV production, and its strategy for dual sales and channels will maintain its brand identity and image. 

The Nexa-badged version of the Wagon R, the Maruti XL5, has been upgraded with some aesthetic interiors and a refined experience for the passengers.
